Yummy! New Publication on the Folate Content of Insects

While insects are only just gaining popularity as a food in Europe, they have been a staple food in many countries for several centuries. This is due not only to their high protein content, but also to their other beneficial ingredients. These include folates, which were investigated in Weber et al. (2022) in 6 different insect species and their feeds. The vitamin B9 content in insects is comparable to various fruits and vegetables and ranges from 59 to 123 µg/100 g, depending on the insect, which means that about 10% of the daily folate requirement can be covered when eating the permitted amount. Insects are thus to be classified as potentially good sources of folate and should not be underestimated, especially with regard to its sustainability
