News from the world of vitamins

Vitamin B12 is one of the most critical vitamins because it almost only occurs in animal foods such as meat and dairy products. Accordingly, vegetarians and vegans, but due to the low physiological resorption also omnivors, commonly show vitamin B12 deficiency.

In our latest paper Wang et al. describe a highly sensitive stable isotope dilution assay LC-MS/MS method for the quantification of four native B12 vitamers. Using 15-N labelled cobalamins as internal standards this innovative method enables the simultaneous determination of four different vitamers. Lambfilet contained the highest B12 total amount with 72 ng/g, compared to other types of meat.
