Flexible management options towards intergenerational fairness in forestry

Forest management planning has to cope with future uncertainty as trees need decades to reach valuable size in central Europe. Current strategies focus on a silvicultural transformation towards more climate resilient forests or measures to enhance the resistance of already established stands against disturbances. The principle of precaution is thus the leading philosophy behind many strategies. We will analyze the relationship of precautionary action and the creation for future management options, understood as flexibility.
