Information to Zoom seminar Dr. Anja Schmidt (Universität Heidelberg, COS)

Dear All,
this Friday (Oct. 16) at 2:00 PM it is my please to host a Zoom seminar of Dr. Anja Schmidt (COS Heidelberg). Anja will speak about "RNA helices as regulators of sexual and asexual plant reproduction".

RNA helicases are abundantly expressed during acquisition of germline fate, resembling their crucial roles in animals. Anja's team now identified functions for new members of this gene family and studied aspects of their evolution. As a candidate that might be involved in determining differences between the reproductive modes, they uncovered a gene, which is differentially expressed between sexual and apomictic accessions of the genus Boechera, a close relative to Arabidopsis. Mutant alleles in Arabidopsis lead to severe defects during germline development and to failure of mitotic divisions. Furthermore, she will report about mutant alleles of another novel RNA helicase, now named LEDA, that lead to features of apomixis in Arabidopsis, including autonomous seed coat formation and, at low frequencies, to polyembryony.
